Charles Sturt University's highest performing tweet this year!

Today at the Charles Sturt University (CSU) Town Hall with all staff across the university,  the Vice Chancellor had a segment where she announced recognitions and rewards. She indicated that the tweet about my ASHA Honours was CSU's "highest performing tweet this year"!

Analysing social media for better public policy

Today I was honoured to open the Charles Sturt University one day symposium titled "Analysing social media for better public policy". Speakers and participants came from across the country, and I was invited to open the event. Details about the symposium are here: https://www.csu.edu.au/research/ilws/events/social-media-symposium

The aims of the symposium were to:

• Share cases where social media has been used to inform or guide public policy and decisions 
• Share research highlighting the application of social media to important policy matters 
• Bring together people working and researching in this developing field 
• Explore challenges of social media data use such as ethics, geolocation, sample representativeness, access to data 
• Consider systems and processes for gathering and analysing social media for public policy and decisions.

 The symposium included discussion about kangaroos, cervical screening, obesity, e-cigarettes, sharks, carp, policymakers, ethics, and concluded with "workshopping the wicked".

Want to research speech pathology in Australia? CSU is the place

Charles Sturt University recently has written an article titled "Want to research speech pathology in Australia? CSU is the place" and has promoted it via social media. Increasing the reach of our research via Twitter

Over the past 2 weeks (20 Feb - 5 March) my tweets have earned "28.8K impressions" (even though I am only following 77 people and have 571 followers), with a daily average of 12 link clicks, 10 retweets, and 16 likes. It is so great to think that this many people are thinking about communication rights. Let's hope that they are also ensuring that people they come across in their daily lives have the right to communicate. #SpeakUp4CommRights

Visit from Bronwyn Hemsley

Yesterday Prof. Bronwyn Hemsley visited Bathurst. We discussed many things including her new appointment as Chair of Speech Pathology Masters Program at @UTSEngage Graduate School of Health. We also planned a social media campaign for the special issue of the International Journal of Speech-Language Pathology celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (#StandUp4HumanRights, #SpeakUp4CommRights). She also gave me another Twitter lesson. It was great to catch up in Bathurst.

At the Speech Pathology Australia Fellows and Life Members lunch I sat near A/Prof Bronwyn Hemsley (@BronwynHemsley) and Dr Caroline Bowen (@speechwoman) and received a personalised tutorial on signing up to Twitter (@SharynneMcLeod). There are so many people in my field who use Twitter, in fact the Speech Pathology Australia National Conference trended number 1 across Australia on 31st May. Many friends, including Provost Brian Goldstein (@goldstein25) have encouraged me to do this for a long time. I think it will be a useful avenue for publicising our work and celebrating achievements of my students and colleagues. However, I still plan to use this blog as my main avenue for describing our work because I need more than a few words at a time!
