We were very pleased to receive approval from the CSU Human Research Ethics Committee today for our research with Catholic Education Tasmania. Now we can begin. Hooray!

Children on campus - Scoping review + preparing for ethics

Today we had two meetings to advance our work about children on campus.

This morning, our review team (Carolyn Gregoric, Suzanne Hopf, Claudio Dionigi and I) worked on the discussion of our paper that includes a scoping review of international literature and rapid review of Austrailan university policies and guidance documents.

This afternoon, our broader group met to discuss writing the ethics application for undertaking research to co-create The Treehouse (virtual and physical) and include children as research participants in our new Children's Voices Centre.

Today we had a CSU Rural Health Research Institute Grant team meeting to discuss our ethics application that was submitted last week - and how we can ensure that we undertake respectful research where we support staff, children, families and one another.

Writing ethics applications takes a long time

Today two of my research higher degree students submitted their ethics applications. Writing ethics applications takes a long time - we have been working on these for months. Each section requires a lot of discussion and thinking. I am really pleased about this. It means that we have considered as many aspects as possible about our research. It means that our research will be as good as it possibly can be. Now we wait to see if there are changes recommended by the ethics committee before we proceed with our research.

Ethical approval for NSW Translational Research Health Grant

This week we have received the final ethical approval in order to undertake our NSW Health Translational Research Grant about waiting for speech pathology. We have had to submit extensive applications (that were different in each case) to Charles Sturt University, NSW Health, and Health Victoria. Hooray - the research now can begin across all of our research sites.

Ethics approval gained from Fiji Ministry of Education, National Heritage, Culture and Arts

Suzanne Hopf, is undertaking her PhD at CSU via distance education from Fiji. Her PhD topic is "Supporting Fijian children's speech, language, and literacy" and she is co-supervised by Dr Sarah McDonagh and myself. Suzanne has just achieved an important milestone: she has received official approval to conduct research in Fiji from the Fiji Ministry of Education, National Heritage, Culture and Arts. She now has to finalise ethical approval from Charles Sturt University, then she will be ready to begin data collection.  In addition, she has just completed writing a journal article titled "World Englishes: A phonological profile of two dialects of Fiji English". This will be submitted to a journal in the next week. Congratulations Suzanne.
