Today Dr Van Tran, Marie Ireland and I were invited speakers at the Faculty of Arts and Education Research Cafe titled "PhD (with Publication) & PhD by Prior Publication". We were able to share our experiences and suggestions. Here is the YouTube recording of the session: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swAddi5ssVo

I'm very proud of all my students achieve during their PhDs. Here is the summary of the session

Please join the School of Social Work and Arts Research Committee for a Research Café about PhD (with Publication) & PhD by Prior Publication. The Café will be of interest to all academic staff and potential PhD candidates. PhD with Publication and PhD by Prior Publication are excellent pathways for those wanting to pursue an academic career and candidates who want to reach a wide audience by disseminating their PhD research, by publication, whilst completing their degree. The Café will provide information about these pathways at CSU and feature a panel of supervisors and graduates who have firsthand experience of the merits and challenges involved.
For a taster see this article in The Conversation by Mhairi Cowden - "A PhD by publication or how I got my doctorate and kept my sanity" https://theconversation.com/a-phd-by-publication-or-how-i-got-my-doctorate-and-kept-my-sanity-11012

Welcoming new staff and mentoring for 2022

I love my role as a formal and informal mentor across my faculty, university, and the world. Over the past few months I have had the opportunity to welcome new staff to the School of Education and to Charles Sturt University and to discuss their research. Today I had a lovely coffee chat with Leanne Gibbs and Kate Smithers who have joined our school this year. Yesterday I had the opportunity to provide advice to Karen Sinclair from the CSU Research Office regarding how to capture research mentoring.

Welcome to CSU Leanne and Kate!

Faculty of Arts and Education Faculty Board Meeting

This morning I attended and participated in the bi-monthly Faculty of Arts and Education Faculty Board Meeting for October which had a 373 page agenda. I am one of two Elected Members of the Professoriate on the Board. There are only 12 elected members on the board, the remainder are ex-officio positions, so we have an important voice.

One highlight: "The Faculty is on track to deliver a balanced budget by the end of 2021, which is the result of a significant, focused effort by all budget centre managers over the last 18 months." (p. 23).

The FOAE Research Report was delivered at this meeting. It was great to see the significant contribution made by the School of Education and our FOR code 3903 (that includes Early Childhood Education, previously 1301).
