CSU orientation week 2026

2026 has officially begun for the Charles Sturt University students. Welcome to CSU to our new undergraduate students!

All of my PhD students have been working hard throughout February. My new PhD student, Felicity Laurence had her PhD induction sessions this week.  I have been delighted to read drafts of journal articles (chapters) ready for submission from Sarah Bartlett, Holly McAlister and Anniek Van Doornik. These three students are in their final year of PhD studies and have undertaken great work.

Welcome to The Treehouse Holly and Merlin

It was lovely to welcome my PhD student Holly McAlister and her dog Merlin to The Treehouse (CSU Bathurst) this week. While visiting, she and Wiebke Freese (visiting PhD scholar from University of Lubeck, Germany) spent time together looking through some of the speech tests I have gathered from across the globe).

PhD students undertake important work

This week I have met with my PhD students - Sarah Bartlett (co-supervised with Carolyn Gregoric) and Holly McAlister (co-supervised with Suzanne Hopf who is the primary supervisor). They are both undertaking important work that changes the lives of children in Australia and Fiji.

Sarah has just completed an intensive period of data collection over three different sites/cities where families of toddlers received 16-weeks of intervention. She is excited about the findings - including what goes unsaid, is missing, hesitant and uncomfortable data - that may be captured in a post qualitative analysis.

Sarah, Sharynne and Carolyn

At the moment Holly is undertaking data analysis with a team of speech pathologists from Fiji and writing an invited chapter about diagnosis of speech sound disorder in children across the world.

I am also working with Holly as guest editor of a special issue of Child Language Teaching and Therapy. We have had over 20 articles submitted for the special issue! This activity has been very valuable for the Children's Voices Centre since 17 CVC affiliates have submitted 5 papers and 8 CVC affiliates have reviewed papers.

PhD students undertake important work.

Visiting PhD student: Ida Wiik Sætherskar

It has been a pleasure to host Ida Wiik Sætherskar, a PhD student from Nord University, Norway during this week at the Children's Voices Centre.  Ida has met many staff and students at CSU, observed children at the Bathurst Early Childhood Intervention Service (BECIS) and presented a talk attended by 30 people (online and in person).

Ida's presentation was titled "Early Childhood Education Teachers' Judgments of Children's Language Skills". Here is her presentation abstract:

Ida Wiik Sætherskar is a speech and language therapist and a PhD research fellow at the Faculty of Education and Arts, Nord University. Ida´s project is a part of the research project SpedAims Kohort, Centre for Research on Special Needs Education and Inclusive Practice (SpedAims). In her doctoral project, Ida focuses her research on early childhood education (ECE) teachers’ judgments of children’s language skills. Successful early language development is vital to children´s later literacy development, education and well-being outcomes, highlighting the importance of early identification and early intervention for children with language delay or language disorders. ECE teachers are in a prime position to identify and support these children, further emphasizing the need for accuracy in judgments of children’s language skills as a part of their competence in supporting children’s language development. Ida will discuss current knowledge about the efficacy of ECE teachers' judgments of and ability to assess children's language and implications of her findings for further study as well as for practice.

Beautiful Seattle - home of the Coast Salish people, innovation, and fun

I have enjoyed exploring Seattle while getting over jetlag with Holly McAlister, my PhD student and my husband. I have enjoyed and learning more about the traditions of the Coast Salish people - particularly at the Seattle Children's Museum. Seattle has gorgeous scenery and is also the home of many innovative companies including Microsoft, Amazon, Boeing, and Alaska Airlines.

The Fish! Philosophy (https://fishphilosophy.com/what-is-fish/) is also from the Pike Place Fish Market Seattle. The central four ideas are:

  • play
  • be there
  • make their day
  • choose your attitude
