Podcast interview - Community Broadcasting Association of Australia

This morning I was interviewed by Noah Secomb, Political Reporter in Canberra for the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) for the Pillar to Post podcast. The topic of the podcast was motivated by the Australian government reducing students' HECS debts in parliament yesterday. Noah wanted to discuss more broadly how much should higher education cost by interviewing me as an example of someone who benefited from free higher education and who advocated for my PhD students.

SDGs podcast for Speech Pathology Australia

Prof Julie Marshall and I were interviewed by Nathan Cornish-Raley for a Speech Pathology Australia podcast in the Speak Up series. We were interviewed about the special issue of the International Journal of Speech-Langauge Pathology focussing on the Sustainable Development Goals. The episode has just been released on Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/speechpathologyaustralia/un-sustainable-development-goals-how-speech-pathologists-can-support-peace-and-prosperity-s05e18

Here are some of Nathan's excellent questions that we discussed:

  • You received a lot of submissions on this topic: 36 articles. Did you think you would get that type of a response? What does that tell us about how speech pathologists see themselves and communication positioned in global, sustainable development?
  • Can you give us an overview of the 17 SDGs? How did they come to be and what is next for them? · There’s an emphasis throughout the work on global partnerships and co-constructing change with local communities or people with lived experience
  • Were there any “lessons-learned” about partnerships and multi-directional learning that stood out to you? · What were some of the things you discovered, or interesting perspectives on sustainability that you found during this project?
  •  There is an international call for an additional Sustainable Development Goal: SDG 18: Communication for All. Tell us about this. Where does it fit within this sustainable development? What movement has already happened in this space? How can speech pathologists help move this forward?

SBS Podcast "My Bilingual Family"

Our VietSpeech team have been contacted by Masako Fukui and Sheila Pham who are developing a new SBS podcast "My Bilingual Family" that focusses on parents trying to raise their kids bilingually (or multilingually). The podcast will be in English, but parts of it will be translated into other languages and broadcast on SBS Radio.

Masako Fukui and Sheila Pham (https://www.sheilatakeabow.com/) have just finished another podcast/radio series for ABC Radio National (RN) called Tongue Tied and Fluent, which just last month won an international award. Tongue Tied and Fluent was directed at a much wider audience.

Here is the link to Tongue Tied and Fluent: https://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/earshot/features/tongue-tied-and-fluent/

Dr Van Tran from our VietSpeech team is also hosting an SBS podcast in Vietnamese to support home language maintenance called "Let's maintain Vietnamese together" https://speakingmylanguages.blogspot.com/2021/11/sbs-radio-program-lets-maintain.html

Speak Up Podcast: "Communication is everyone's right"

I was interviewed by Anneke Flinn from Speech Pathology Australia for their Speech Pathology Week podcast titled "Communication is everyone's right". In the podcast I was able to share our presentation to the United Nations in 2019 and how we all can advocated for communication as everyone's right.

Happy Speech Pathology Week! In this week’s episode, SPA’s Anneke Flinn explores this year’s Speech Pathology Week theme, “Communication is everyone’s right” with Professor Sharynne McLeod, from Charles Sturt University. Sharynne would like to extend her gratitude to Gail Mulcair (SPA CEO), Gaenor Dixon (2019 SPA President), Belinda Hill (2019 SPA Vice President) and Jess McLeod for sharing her UN journey. To view the Speech Pathology Australia “Speak Up for Communication Rights” page referred to in this episode. Speech Pathology Australia acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of lands, seas and waters throughout Australia, and pay respect to Elders past, present and future. We recognise that the health and social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are grounded in continued connection to culture, country, language and community.

The President of Speech Pathology Australia sent the following email:

Hi Sharynne and Anneke, Thank you for a great commute home today. The SpeakUp podcast for SPweek was excellent. Both a celebration of the work we do, and a galvanising call for activities during the week. Nicely done! Best wishes Tim.

Speech Pathology Week 2021

22-28 August is Speech Pathology Week 2021. The theme is Communication is everyone's right. https://www.speechpathologyaustralia.org.au/SPAweb/whats_on/Speech_Pathology_Week

"Speech pathologists work to ensure everyone can communicate with confidence. It is important that the broader community understands that:

  • communication is a basic human right;
  • 1.2 million Australians live with communication disability;
  • communication disability is largely invisible. Unseen and out-of-sight;
  • confident communication helps maximise educational, health and social outcomes; and
  • communication is more than just speech. "
I was interviewed by Speech Pathology Australia for their SPA Week podcast which will be released soon.

Recording a podcast for Speech Pathology Australia

Today I recorded a podcast for Speech Pathology Australia week. The theme is "Speak Up for Communication Rights" so they interviewed me about speaking at the United Nations (https://speakingmylanguages.blogspot.com/2019/06/presentation-at-united-nations-in-ny.html)

It was an honour to be interviewed by Anneke Flinn from SPA and to relive the wonderful opportunity I had in 2018 to edit a special issue of the International Journal of Speech-Language Pathology on communication rights then to speak at the United Nations in 2019.

My paper in the special issue of IJSLP that was titled "Communication rights: Fundamental human rights for all" has been downloaded over 25,000 times! https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17549507.2018.1428687

Here are some links about communication rights:
