Each chapter is written by the author who created the intervention (or an emminent researcher) and is accompanied by a video of the author and a child undertaking the intervention.

Twenty Interventions for Speech Sound Disorders: A Guide for Selection and Implementation

This weekend I finalised and uploaded our very ambitious 1-hour seminar for the forthcoming American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Annual Convention to be held both virtually and online in November 2021 in Washington DC. Our seminar was titled "Twenty Interventions for Speech Sound Disorders: A Guide for Selection and Implementation" and included a 1 minute presentation and 30 second video for each of the 20 interventions. The 20 presenters from US, UK, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia sent files for me to combine - and I am really pleased with the result. Lynn Williams presented the clincal decision-making model, Elise Baker presented the logic model and Paul H. Brookes publishing organised the 30 second video clips of intervention sessions from our recent book. It is going to be a fantastic resource for clinicians and students.

This oral seminar will provide an overview of 20 evidence-based intervention approaches for speech sound disorders in children. A brief overview of each approach and short video clip will be presented by each intervention author or reviewer. These quick introductions will enable clinicians to learn more about a number of different approaches. A clinical decision-making model that considers Child Characteristics, Intervention Characteristics, and Clinician Characteristics will be presented. Finally, a Logic Model will be presented to guide clinicians in developing a professional development program to learn a new intervention approach and implement it with fidelity.

Today I had a great meeting with my colleagues to continue our work supporting children with speech sound disorders. We have more plans for conference presentations, papers, and advocacy.

ICPLA 2021 and ISSDC

This evening I had a lovely time catching up with my colleague Dr Joanne Cleland from the University of Strathclyde. She is the convenor of ICPLA 2020 - which was postponed to 2021, and now will be held online. We shared ideas about the ECV2020 conference and how to run a conference across the world's timezones.

Earlier today, my copy of Interventions for Speech Sound Disorders in Children (2nd ed) arrived. Joanne co-authored chapter 22 on Biofeedback interventions - so it was great to share this with her.

Launch of Interventions for Speech Sound Disorders in Children (2nd edition)

This morning I met online with my co-editors - Prof Lynn Williams and Prof Rebecca McCauley - and the publishers from Paul H. Brookes - Liz Gildea, Tess Hoffman, Astrid Zuckerman - to celebrate the launch of Interventions for Speech Sound Disorders in Children (2nd edition) (ISSDC 2e). We were meant to launch the book at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Convention in San Diego in November; however this conference was cancelled due to COVID-19. Our virtual celebration was wonderful.

The marketting campaign for our second edition has begun

Now that I have finished proofing the entire book, the marketting campaign has begun for Interventions for Speech Sound Disorders in Children - Second Edition edited by A. Lynn Williams, Sharynne McLeod and Rebecca J. McCauley. It's exciting to think that people will soon be using our book to support children's communication across the world.

I have finally finished copyediting and pageproofing every one of the 652 pages in Interventions for Speech Sound Disorders in Children - Second Edition edited by A. Lynn Williams, Sharynne McLeod and Rebecca J. McCauley. The first edition, published in 2010 was a rich resource of interventions with chapters written by the creators of the intervention approaches (in almost every instance).  The second edition has 24 chapters and videos (some new and the rest are extensively updated). We are very proud of it. 

Dr. Caroline Bowen was very generous in her Foreword too: 

If the award existed, my vote for International SLP/SLT Book of the Decade, 2020–2029, would go, unreservedly, to ISSDC 2e. And if you’re there at the glittering awards ceremony and you want to spot me in the crowd, I’m the rowdy woman cheering the loudest. (p. xxix)

Second edition of Interventions for Speech Sound Disorders in Children (ISSDC) celebrations

We have just submitted the final version of the manuscript for the second edition of Interventions for Speech Sound Disorders in Children (ISSDC). We still have the copyediting, typesetting and publication ahead, but this week marks a very significant milestone. It has been a joy to work with Lynn Williams and Rebecca McCauley as co-editors on this important book and Astrid Zuckerman, Liz Gildea and Tess Hoffman from Paul H. Brookes Publishing Co. The book should be ready for use in classes at the beginning of 2021.

It has been 10 years since the publication of the first edition of Interventions for Speech Sound Disorders in Children (ISSDC)... The first serious discussions to revise our book occurred at the 2016 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association convention in Philadelphia at a dinner with a number of our phonology colleagues. From there the work began, but changes in our lives and work meant the second edition took longer than expected. Because of this we are especially grateful for the patience of our publisher and for the generosity and expertise of the chapter authors who so effectively shared their knowledge of each intervention while meeting the constraints of the organizational structure of this book. We both appreciate and enjoyed working with so many of the world’s foremost authors and researchers in treating speech sound disorders in children. This book exists because of their dedication and work to make a difference in children’s lives.

Working on the second edition of Interventions for Speech Sound Disorders in Children

Over the past two years we (Lynn Williams, Rebecca McCauley and I) have been working on the second edition of Interventions for Speech Sound Disorders in Children with Paul H. Brookes Publishing. We are getting closer to submitting the manuscript and enjoyed chatting with Liz Gildea and Astrid Zuckerman about the fact that they plan to have it published for the 2020 ASHA convention in San Diego.

Also at the convention our Sound Start Study team received the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research Editor's Award.

Additionally, Corrine Deutenberg was selected to receive a Student Research Travel Award to attend the ASHA Convention. She was selected for this award because she was the first author on our poster titled Using Drawings to Understand Jamaican Children’s Talking, which was the "highest-rated, student-authored paper in its Convention topic area”.  Congratulations Corrine!
