Early Childhood Research Group meeting - exciting innovations

Today our Early Childhood Research Group met and discussed a number of innovations stemming from the focus on research by our new Dean, Professor John McDonald.

The Impact of the Coronavirus Pandemic: Implications for Community and Social Development

My CSU colleague Professor Manohar Parwar is the editor of The International Journal of Community and Social Development.
The journal has just published a special issue titled "The Impact of the Coronavirus Pandemic: Implications for Community and Social Development" (Volume 2, issue 2) available here: https://journals.sagepub.com/toc/coda/2/2

It has insights from Australia, New Zealand, India, Italy, United States, Sweden, United Kingdom, Southern African Development Community (SADC)

VietSpeech Study 2 data milestone

This week we
  • finished the main analyses of the VietSpeech Study 2 English (adult and child) data analysis - Cen (Audrey) Wang and myself
  • finished entering all of the VietSpeech Study 2 Vietnamese (adult) data so it is ready for analysis - Kate Margetson and Katherine White
Not long ago we finished the VietSpeech Study 2 inter-rater reliability - and were extremely pleased with the high level of reliability amongst raters.

We are writing a series of journal articles that we hope to submit later this year.

Once data collection is over there is a LOT to do!

Children's English consonant acquisition in the United States: A review

Our US consonant acquisition review paper has been published overnight (OPEN ACCESS):
Crowe, K., & McLeod, S. (2020). Children's English consonant acquisition in the United States: A review. American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. https://doi.org/10.1044/2020_AJSLP-19-00168

(The US posters are located below the posters for English acquisition across the whole world. Note the different images in the top right corner – either children around the world or around the US flag)

This paper used the same methods as the McLeod and Crowe (2018) paper that analysed data across 27 languages (OPEN ACCESS).
McLeod, S. & Crowe, K. (2018). Children’s consonant acquisition in 27 languages: A cross-linguistic review. American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology, 27, 1546-1571. https://doi.org/10.1044/2018_AJSLP-17-0100

To support the application of this research to practice, we have co-authored the following paper that is currently in press (but not yet available online):
Ireland, M., McLeod, S., Farquharson, K., & Crowe, K. (2020, in press June). Evaluating children in U.S. public schools with speech sound disorders: Considering federal and state laws, guidance, and research. Topics in Language Disorders. https://doi.org/10.1097/TLD.0000000000000226

It would have been great to be able to present this work in our invited session at the ASHA convention this year, but it has been cancelled due to COVID-19.

There has been a LOT of positive social media interest in this paper already. For example,

SOTE Colleagues Research Ideas and Encouragement (aka CV writing workshop)

Our School of Teacher Education (SOTE) Colleagues Research Ideas and Encouragement Group (previously called the CV writing workshop). We have had a number of sessions together, so today everyone talked about their life/teaching/research since we last met. I was encouraged to hear that everyone had been working on their research over the semester break, and most had space this semester to continue their momentum. We also talked about:
  • Signing up for journal alerts
  • Targetting journals when you begin writing each journal article
  • ResearchGate
  • Google Scholar - linking to CSU library
  • Planning for promotion by looking at the requirements for the level above your current employment
  • Teaching quality
  • Grant opportunities/workshops/writing ROPES
I really enjoy these meetings.
