Nearly finished
It is such a joy to work with my PhD students. Anna Cronin is almost finished her PhD and should submit within the next month or so. Dr Sarah Verdon and I met with Anna again today for her weekly virtual meeting. Anna has undertaken her entire PhD via distance, so the COVID-19 lockdown hasn't changed our meeting arrangements at all. Best wishes Anna for the final phase.

Early Childhood Research Group meeting
Today our CSU Early Childhood Research Group met online. We discussed category 1-4 grants, and had an interactive presentation from Jane Norton from CSU Library about Research Professional. We also had a wonderful discussion to support one another through the COVID-19 pandemic changes to our research lives.
Congratulations Trinh Foundation: 12 years old
Recently Trinh Foundation Australia (TFA) marked 12 years of supporting the development of the speech-language pathology (speech and language therapy) profession in Vietnam.
Our VietSpeech team has had a lot of involvement over the years, and some of our involvement has been highlighted in this newsletter
1. Dr Sarah Verdon is a Trinh Foundation Board Member
TFA's MissionTheir latest newsletter outlines many of their achievements: https://mailchi.mp/22b69149187d/benefits-of-volunteering-in-vietnam-4943873?e=bec50f8ff8
To improve the quality of life of Vietnamese people through collaborations and
To develop knowledge and skills in management of communication and speech disorders in Vietnam.
Our VietSpeech team has had a lot of involvement over the years, and some of our involvement has been highlighted in this newsletter
1. Dr Sarah Verdon is a Trinh Foundation Board Member
Regular TFA Board meetings are held virtually by Zoom, about 10 times each year, and once a year we meet face to face for our annual strategic planning day- this year on 7 March...2. Kate Margetson has begun a new (extra) position with the Trinh Foundation
"TFA are pleased to announce the commencement of our newest project with our partners Humanity and Inclusion at the end of this month. This exciting project, supported by USAID, will be associated with Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) in Vietnam, and is planned for two phases. Phase one involves mapping followed by a Needs Assessment of current AAC across Vietnam. We are delighted that previous TFA volunteer Ms Kate Margetson has accepted a consultant role for this important and needed project. Kate, who will work remotely from Australia, has extensive experience in this area, having developed an iPad app when volunteering at the Kianh Foundation in Vietnam in 2015-16. She will be ably assisted in Vietnam by the current leader of the Vietnamese Speech Therapy network Dr Thao. (UPNT Graduate 2010-12). Following completion of phase one, recommendations will be made to Humanity and Inclusion regarding the development or application of an existing APP to suit the Vietnamese context as phase two of the project. This APP will meet the critical needs of a large cross section of the Vietnamese community who experience significant communication impairment."3. Dr Sarah Verdon, Dr Ben Pham and Prof Sharynne McLeod currently are supervising Masters students' research in Vietnam
"And thanks also to the Australian academics and Dr Ben Pham in Hanoi who have used the unexpectedly available time as a result of the suspension of teaching in the Master degree to work intensively with the students on their thesis research proposals and ethics applications, while also still working in the new normal in Australia and Vietnam. "4. Prof Sharynne McLeod's congratulations were published in the newsletter:
“Congratulations to Lindy McAllister and Sue Woodward for their vision and long-term commitment and all of the dedicated board members, students, staff, volunteers, lecturers, clinical educators, family members, donors and so many others who have worked hard towards the goal of the right to communicate for everyone in Vietnam.” Professor Sharynne McLeod - Charles Sturt University and volunteer lecturer

The impact of coronavirus around the world
I work with colleagues and have many friends in many different countries. Over the past week I have talked with many of them. It has been interesting to learn from them how their countries are supporting their citizens regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Vietnam: People have been at home since 1st February and say it has been a very long "Lunar new year holiday (Tet)"
- Fiji, Tonga, Vanuatu, and Solomon Islands: Cyclone Harold has caused a lot of destruction impacting efforts to control the coronavirus and restrictions. They have a 28 day quarantine because there was evidence of transmission after the 14 days.
- UK: Many SLTs have been redeployed to work in hospitals with people with COVID-19. RCSLT has provided guidance: https://www.rcslt.org/learning/covid-19 (see image below). It seems that many people in the UK in homes and aged care facilities have not been tested for COVID-19 even if they have "viral pneumonia with coronavirus symptoms". Here are some fascinating webinars: https://www.rcslt.org/learning/covid-19/rcslt-guidance#section-3
- Iceland: The population of Iceland has been tested, enabling a nation-wide understanding of the spread of the disease.
- New Zealand: Early application of stage 4 restrictions has meant that few people have the coronavirus and very few have died to date. The NZ government has published some helpful Easy Read guidelines: https://covid19.govt.nz/resources/information-sheets/
- US: Many SLPs have been redeployed to work in hospitals with people with COVID-19 and ASHA has provided a resource page: https://www.asha.org/About/Coronavirus-Updates/. Free resources about telepractice are here: https://pubs.asha.org/special-collections/telepracticeresources
- Australia: Some speech pathologists have been trained and are ready to be redeployed if needed. Speech Pathology Australia has dedicated webpages here: https://www.speechpathologyaustralia.org.au/SPAweb/About_us/COVID-19_News_and_Information/SPAweb/About_Us/News/COVID-19.aspx

Special issue: Transcription of Children's Speech
Over the past couple of years, Yvonne Wren, Sarah Verdon and I have been editing a special issue of Folia Phoniatrica et Logopedia on the topic of "Transcription of Children's Speech". We are pleased to announce it has just been published. It can be found here (https://www.karger.com/Journal/Issue/278480) and includes excellent papers from authors across the world (Canada, South Africa, UK, Ireland, US, Australia, and Vietnam). We undertook this task as part of being on the Child Speech Committee of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP).

Easter bonnet morning tea
This morning Dr Tamara Cumming organised another School of Teacher Education Morning Tea. We typically meet face-to-face every month or two, but now we are meeting virtually (and more regularly). This morning's catch up had an Easter bonnet (hat) theme. We all loved chatting with one another and playing with our virtual backgrounds in Zoom. My Easter hat was inspired by our VietSpeech project and Dr Ben Pham and her family.

New ways of supporting children with SSD
Today Emily Davies (Western NSW Health), Prof Kirrie Ballard (University of Sydney) and I had a wonderful 1.5-hour brainstorm about new ways of supporting children with speech sound disorders during these challenging times. Kirrie and I had another brainstorm earlier in the week sharing new knowledge we have been creating in separate research projects.

Artwork during online meetings
I have been delighted by the way my students and colleagues interact with their children during our meetings while we are all working from home. Here are a few of the lovely drawings their children have created for me.

CSU staff Town Hall Meetings
Today the Vice Chancellor and senior executive held a 2-hour Town Hall meeting for 667 people via Zoom. It was an informative, realistic and helpful meeting. Over 70% of CSU staff are now working from home and only 116 students remain living on campus. We discussed the CSU Advantage: that CSU has been working in the distance education and online environment for decades. There will be difficult times ahead - but I was impressed by the vision and thoroughness of CSU's response.
