Vale John Bernthal

Emeritus Professor John E. Bernthal, PhD, a giant in the field of children's speech passed away yesterday. His contribution and encouragement will always be treasured.

Professor John Bernthal was ASHA President in 2001. His textbook (Speech Sound Disorders in Children) with Nicholas Bankson and Peter Flipsen Jnr. is currently in it's 9th edition, he created an assessment (BBTOP) and published many articles in the field. He invited me to write a chapter in the 5th edition of his text, and has continued to invite me to write each new addition. We also wrote an encyclopedia entry together. Every ASHA convention he would seek me out to catch up on our lives. Our last conversation was in September 2020 via zoom. He was widely loved and respected - and will be greatly missed throughout the world. Vale John.

I love these sentences from his obituary "Bernthal crafted a rich personal life. Along with his spouse, Marilyn, he visited every continent except Antarctica. He ate an exceptional amount of ice cream..."

New books for 2022

Today I recieved my copy of the ninth edition of Speech Sound Disorders in Children: Articulation and Phonological Disorders edited by John Bernthal, Nicolas Bankson and Peter Flipen Jnr. I wrote chapter 3 titled "Speech sound acquisition" (pp. 57-108). It was bittersweet, because while I wrote chapter 3, I was in regular contact with John Bernthal, and since that time John has passed away. It is nice to hold his legacy in my hand. It is rare for a book in our profession to make it to the ninth edition.

Today I also received an email from Dee Fish and Amy Meredith who wrote:

Dee and I just submitted our draft to Plural for the 3rd edition of "Here's How to Treat Childhood Apraxia of Speech." ... Throughout this process, we have read your research and reached out to many of you for additional information. This has been a humbling and rewarding process. ... You have all done amazing work for the benefit of these children we all care so deeply about.

Writing an encyclopedia entry

John Bernthal invited me to co-author an encyclopedia entry with him. It has been an interesting experience to write in a different genre. I am so used to referencing my sources, yet encyclopedia entries typically do not provide author (date) citations within text. We have just submitted our revisions and look forward to its publication.

Meeting with a giant in our field

This week A/Prof Elise Baker and I were honoured to meet with Professor Emeritus John Bernthal, University of Nebraska via Zoom. He is currently editing the 9th edition of his popular text. Here are the details of the 8th edition:

Bernthal, J. E., Bankson, N. W., & Flipsen, P. (2017). Articulation and phonological disorders: Speech sound disorders in chilldren (8th ed.). Pearson.

We had a lot to discuss, including that I have been invited to update my chapter on speech acquisition for the 9th edition, and submitted it a short time ago.

We also lamented that we will not be able to see one another at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association convention this year in San Diego since the ASHA conference has been cancelled for the first time since World War II.

Meeting old friends and making new friends at ASHA

The annual American Speech-Language-Hearing Convention is a wonderful time to reconnect with colleagues from around the world, and to meet new colleagues. Much of my time at ASHA is spent discussing research ideas with my colleagues. Here are a few photos of people I was able to meet with while at ASHA this year.

ASHA convention update

The 2016 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association convention was the largest on record with over 16,000 attendees! Here are some more interesting statistics:
  • 4000+ first time attendees
  • 3268 proposals submitted from 5918 authors (30% of presenters were first timers)
  • 37 short courses presented
  • 147 invited sessions presented
  • 1072 podium sessions (including technical sessions) presented
  • 1740 poster sessions presented
  • 32 topic chairs + 519 committee members
My students, colleagues and I presented 6 papers during the convention (1 panel, 1 2-hour seminar, 4 technical sessions) and learned a lot from the other presentations we attended. We also valued the networking opportunities with friends and colleagues from all over the world.
